International Conference on Climate Change, Gwalior, February 2015

Climate ChangeB.A. Daniel delivering a plenary talk on impact of climate change on species range spread

5th International Conference on Climate Change and Sustainable Management of Natural Resources, attended by B.A. Daniel was organised by Department of Life Sciences, ITM University, Gwalior, 9-11 February 2015.

Impact of climate change on biodiversity is one of the 12 themes of the conference in which a plenary talk was given by Daniel on the ongoing research project on mosquito surveillance initiative. A large number of mosquito species are principle vectors of a wide range of vector borne diseases. Global warming, in addition to the ongoing human influencing activities, has emerged as an important contributory factor on species distribution. These factors increase the possibility of disease vector mosquito species and their associated diseases being introduced to new areas or extending their range. Hence monitoring is essential if such chances are to be detected. He shared the monitoring initiative set up in 48 stations around the world which was stared by WAZA and the Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, in concert with the Zoological Society of London and Imperial College. He also shared the new initiative in India which will form an important part of an international, largely zoo based, mosquito surveillance Initiative.

The data generated from this project will help in the monitoring and control of vector species and vector borne diseases and also help raise levels of awareness among public and policy makers in particulars regarding the significant health issues associated with potential range expansion of disease vector mosquito species and the need for effective monitoring and control efforts.
